Recently, you went snowshoeing for the first time. What was that like?

It was awesome – different from anything I’d done before! We wanted to hike at a high elevation because in a few weeks my husband and I are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. We didn’t mean to go snowshoeing at all; the snow was just too deep to hike. We took a tram up to 8,500 feet and then took off on our rented snowshoes for about four hours. Man, was I sore! It’s beautiful on the mountain, everything covered in snow. After climbing a while we were pretty much the only ones up there and got up to 9,500 feet. It was about 20 degrees at the top! We couldn't stop for long or we would cool down really fast.

Did the experience change your view of "adventure"?

Yes! Snowshoeing definitely made me want to try more new things. It gave me a sense of accomplishment and it was a lot of fun. Sure, we were exhausted, but afterward we treated ourselves to a huge dinner. And it was a great workout. Even though we kind of fell into it, it was a good experience.

What would you tell someone who wants to go beyond their comfort zone but hasn’t found the motivation to do it?

The important thing is that we reached out to someone. We wanted to hike, but since we’re not very experienced mountaineers we contacted a friend who’s on a search-and-rescue team. He researched what we needed and helped us plan our trip.

You mentioned a Mt. Kilimanjaro trip coming up. Tell us about that.

It's a week-long hike and we'll be going over 19,000 feet. On our snowshoeing trip, we climbed to 9,500 feet so this next adventure should be interesting!
