When in doubt, throw it out?
Many foods are wasted because they weren’t consumed before the “use by” date stamped on the label. Challenge yourself to go through your cupboard and refrigerator today and make a list of foods that will expire in the next two weeks. Plan ahead and create menus to use up perishable foods before they go bad.

I just open a box of Kashi snack bar box that I just bought from Costco, and inside, there are 4 dead moth, and one of the moth seal with one of the snack bar package, do any of you have this experience? should I continue eat the whole box or should I throw them away?
I watch expiration dates ‘like a hawk’. Old habit from childhood. In fact I just did it today, before I joined Kashi.com. So I didn’t need to be challenged. Some bread that smelled old, even though not expired, is drying to feed to the squirrels in my backyard. Like Annaoak said, ‘that old or iffy food’ can be suspicious too. It’s better to move it out than digest it and be ill. Any grain foods can be fed to the birds and animals outside no matter where you live, country or city.
This is a great time to clean out the fridge and pantry. Get rid of that old or iffy food before the holidays and have peace of mind that no one will get sick from old food.
wow this is a great tip and i will do this tomorrow
yes, my household plans its meals very well with the expiration dates in mind already
I only purchase fresh veggies/fruit – and meat. Everything is perishable, and so it gets used. I try to purchase food with recyclable containers too :)
This is a wonderful tip!
Hi, I just received a sample package of GOLEAN Crunch with my Sunday paper yesterday and I wonder if it’s supposed to be this hard. It has a date of 073000APB on it. It wasn’t as tasty as I thought it would be.
Cleaned out the fridge tonight.
I check all my food every few months to make sure that any item that is close to being outdated is moved towards the front and used first. Nothing is worse that cooking a great meal, then feeling ill and finding out you used something that was too old.
I went thru my MIL’s pantry and found food that had expirations years of 2005. Talk about surprised. My Grandmother always taught me to throw left overs away after 3 days. This has always been my rule of thumb and so far no one has ever gotten sick from old food
