Plant a victory garden

Historically, victory gardens have helped stock the pantry during wartime food shortages. Nowadays, they’re taking on a new, progressive activism as gardeners turn toward locally raised food, grow community, and save on grocery bills. The First Family even answered calls to plant an organic garden on the White House lawn! Today, do your part—and start imagining all that fresh produce—by planning yours. Local gardening organizations can help.

I absolutely love gardening. We started our first garden here in N ID this spring and while the deer have enjoyed most of it (couldn’t afford a fence this year… but next… things will be different) we have had an abundance of summer squash, some beans and a cuc and tomatoe and it isn’t over yet, though things are slowing down a lot with cooler weather.

we had so many vegetables we canned several dozen jars of pasta sauce as well as salsa and roasted red peppers. We gave 5 of our elderly neighbors canned goods as well as fresh beggies every week and are still giving them food and we still have an abundance. We are all happy and loving the grocery receipt reduction!

Although challenging I find planting my garden very rewarding. I have started several square foot gardens that I mixed with the Lasagna gardening style. It has been a great learning experience and a lot of work, but it will mean less work next year. I have planted many tomato plants, cauliflower, squash, broccoli, onions and cucumbers jut to name a few. It is extremely exciting!

I grew tomatoes and onions and several varieties of peppers as well as basil, oregano, lemon balm, rosemary and thyme. Everything is growing superbly. I have been using the herbs for a few weeks now..and planted the tomatoes and onions and peppers in the ground on May 17th and I already have a dozen tomatoes on the plants already..they are little green balls so far but doing super well!!! Im stoked about making sauces and salsas and all kinds of goodies at home :o)

I love watching my garden grow! With all of the rain, it’s been a steady process.
