Trek your food home
Shopping for foods at the local farmers’ market not only gets you outside, it lends itself to lots of walking and carrying – in short, great exercise! The next time you go shopping, challenge yourself to bring a backpack to the farmers’ market and walk your purchases home.
Always consult a physician before starting any exercise routine.

I love the farmers market, but wish it was open more then two days a week. The fresher the better!!!
I work downtown and shop at the grocery store there. I have to walk the food back to the office and then from the office to the train. Lug Lug Lug. It’s great.
Even though it is Wisconsin and winter, my son and I walk to the grocery store and use our reusable bags. We sort bags to go to his place or mine. I have a few plastic and paper bags for yucky things, too. We are allergic to sulfites, so he has eaten a lot of organic always. I am allergic to BHA & BHT that are EVERYWHERE. Madison has a lot of walkers.
Our farmers market is in the down time between summer market and winter market. However, I ALWAYS carry a backpack (I’d love a cute purse but the backpack is essential!) and ALWAYS walk! We don’t even own a car so we use our lovely feet or mass transit. We stock up on reusable bags and have gone from about 2dozen plastic bags each week to 1 or 2 – usually to keep wet items (like fresh cilantro or carrots) from yucking up our other groceries. We have a natural foods co-op 2 blocks away and 1 on the way to our sons school. Since our son can’t eat artificial colors or sodium benzoate (ridiculously common ingredients in your grocery store!) we shop there ALOT!
I will have to wait until March for the Farmer’s Market, but I can stil l walk to the store to get groceries!!
I will walk about 4 miles to and from the mall at work and pick up lunch today because it’s Tuesday and I’m not to sure if Farmers markets are open in the winter months. I will also tek to Whole Foods Market and get somethings for dinner.
Our Farmers Market is closed until June and it would be too far and dangerous (traffic) to trek. Instead, I will substitue this challenge with the opportunity to go to Home Depot and purchase 20 bags of lime for my Vegetable Garden! I can then carry the bags one by one to my garden site as an additonal work out session today.
