Challenge Yourself for: 180 days

Fresh herbs are not only a great way to add interesting flavors to your meals, they’re also packed with nutrients. When you have them readily available, you can quickly toss them into your favorite dishes.

During the next six months, try growing a few of your favorite herbs either in your garden or in a small window box.

(We’ve given you 180 days for this Challenge. When you log your progress, you only need to log as many – or as few – days as you think are applicable.)

My herb garden has Basils; Thai, Purple Ruffles, Globe, Genovese, a varigated sweet and lemon, too many Mints; Pineapple, Orange, Chocolate, Peppermint, Spearmint, “The Best”, Lebanese, Swiss and one really fuzzy variety that I can’t id, Oregano, Italian, Mexican and Greek, Lavender, Chives, Lemongrass, Garlic, Savory, Chervil, Flat leaf Parsley, Sage, Rosemary…..my Thyme did not do so well. I had Mother of Thyme as well as Lemon and Tri-Color.

I adore herbs and cooking with them. We love pesto around here, good thing!

I just planted some organic sage, and I already have organic basil growing. They’re so cute and useful! Where else can I find herbs like parsley and mint? Some of my grocery stores do not carry seeds right now!

I am on the Advisory Board of our Diversity Council at work. We recently got permission to start a garden club! We are growing our garden in the unused cement planters in our courtyard. One has lavender in it, and we will use other vacant planters very soon….LOVE your ideas posted here! Thank You!

The last week of May I started from seed: chives, parsley, chammmile (I love it in tea), and spearmint (for ice cubes). Usually I end up killing at least 3/4 of what I plant every year so I wish for better weather. I live in PA and the high was 51 degrees (it is June 3rd) today. Good Luch to everyone with their herb garden!

Started growing basil, chives, and oregano a couple weeks ago and they are finally big enough for use. They make a great addition to sandwiches, salads, pastas, etc. and are a healthier option than fatty salad dressings, sauces, and high sodium.

I made a permanent raised bed with untreated wood for my perrenial herbs. My annual herbs get tucked in around my veggie plants. In the perrenial bed we have Oregano, Mint, Lemon Balm, Onion Chives, Garlic Chives, Sage, Pineapple Sage, Stevia, Sorrel, Thai Basil (annual), Catnip, Ginger, Bee Balm, Feverfew, and a few others I can’t remember. The herbs seem to do better if you keep them trimmed up, and the best way to do that is to use them!

We’ve finally started our garden for this year and our kids can’t wait to get out and plant. The weather around Chicago has been a bit chilly, we’re all happy to start our herbs and veggies. Happy Gardening.

I just used the first herb from my garden today. Last years cilantro went to seed and is now growing strong. I just researched and found that cilantro likes to grow in cool weather. Who knew. Nobody was more surprised than I was to look out and see something green growing in the garden already.

I grew herbs last summer and plan to start again soon. Basil, parsley, dill, mint…simpler this year, but a little goes a long way.

I had a porch garden last year at my apt and now I have…gasp…a yard! I cant wait to get going again! It’s near March in New England and we are still getting our frosts so I’ll probably start some herbs in my kitchen in a few weeks and start growing some veggies in a lil over a month! I seriously can not wait!

I do feel like a bit of a cheat on this challenge as I already have a huge fully functional vegetable and herb garden but I couldn’t resist. There is always room for more herbs though so I will challenge myself to add to the collection. I’m building the next plot this week. Herbs rock!
