Quit your car

Submitted by SiteEditor Read more 30 day challenge, daily challenge, eco-friendly, and living responsibly
Challenge Yourself for: 24 Hours

There’s no way around it: Cars pollute. Here are some cleaner ideas for getting places, ranging from “light green” to “forest green”:
• Walk – Fresh air, exercise, and a surprisingly quick trip if you work it.
• Bike – Some commutes are faster this way, and daytime errands are a snap.
• Telecommute – Working from home just 1 day a week can increase productivity.
• Bus – A good book, laptop, or simply time to relax – what’s not to like?

Today, challenge yourself to quit your car, even if it’s just to run a couple errands.

I have been walking for a long time and it’s my favoret way to get around. In fact my car broke down on me bake in May 08 and even when I have my husbands car my 4 yr old would rather walk lol. We put in at least 4 miles a day walking and my husband just got me a car last night that I won’t have untill Sunday and it took him so long because he knows I want to go Biofule… Yay I’m going biofule Yay… I’m so happy.

my jeep broke down and would cost $$ to fix, as well as the rising gas prices, it just makes more sense for me to take the bus. it saves my sanity from the ever increasing traffic, as well! :-) i feel more relaxed when i get home from work. and i get to socialize more on public transportation that i do driving.

Instead of hopping in the car and driving to the local Subway, my dad and I walked there. Not only was our lunch great, but we saved on gas and helped the environment!

I don’t use a car – I bike or walk whereever I need to go. It is helathier, saves money on gas and no car payment since I no longer own a car.

Use a pedometer to track your 10,000 steps a day – you have to give up some car time to log the steps!

I just moved into a small city about 6 months ago, and I love it. I used to live in the back woods wehre it was at least 10 miles from anything, so being able to take the bus and walk everywhere feels amazing. When I was going to college, I always took the city bus or carpooled with people. I currently don’t own a car, but will eventually have to since I’m moving again in August. I will still be able to take the bus, but for large shopping trips and what not, I would need to use a car. I walk somewhere around 5-10 miles a day, depending on how much running around I have to do, and where I have to go. I love it, I’ve never felt better :D

I try to use transit when it goes to where I need to get to. My family is currently planning an around home, transit based, vacation for the summer.

I have a scooter, and now that it is nice out my car stays home half the time. Does this help? I also walk to get lunch during the weekday about half the time.

I’ve been thinking about getting a moped, anyone else considered?

I’ve been making a concerted effort to take the bus to work MOST days. I have learned that my teenagers are able to be more self sufficient if I am not here to fuss over them. For myself, I can use the bus time to be a kinder, gentler person from not having ‘white knuckled’ all the way downtown. (I have a 20+ mile route.)
I obviously save on the gas $$, but the oil changes are less frequent, the wear and tear ‘rate’ is lessened as well.
My newest self-challenge is to rely on the corner market on foot or bike, making smaller volume purchases more frequently—and engaging those teens to be ‘hunter/gatherers’ as well! WISH ME LUCK!!

Love using the bus to sightsee on Friday afternoons! Use the bus 3-5 days.

I live in a large city, so instead of driving everywhere, I utilize publis buses which run on Natural Gas instead of diesel.

I live in a very small town and walk or bike every where. The only time I use my car is to go into the big town, but I try to save up all of the things I can’t get here for one big trip a week or every two weeks.

When my daughter called and had forgotten her english book, I rode my bike to her school(over 3 miles) instead of jumping in the car! Felt good, just a little too cool.

I don’t drive my car down here at school and when I go home for the summer, I don’t plan on driving as much as I have in the past. Luckily, I clean for a few people in my hometown, so I can ride my bike into my job. I will be keeping the air cleaner AND getting a good workout. =)
