Water your garden right

Gardens are gorgeous – and potentially a waste of water. However, there are ways to conserve this valuable resource and enjoy your garden at the same time. It just takes planning.

While watering your garden this weekend, challenge yourself to find ways to reduce your water consumption. Here are some tips:
• Water pre-dawn or after dusk to reduce evaporation
• Use ground cover like bark or mulch to preserve soil moisture
• Use native and drought-resistant species, which require less water

I watered yesterday evening and won’t water again for 4-5 days. Is that too often?

It all depends on where you live and how much humidity there is. i won’t be watering for a couple of days because of the rain that we have received. I normally water in the early mornings too – save water that way.

We’ve had pretty steady rainfall so far this season, so aside from when we initially planted our vegetables we haven’t had to water them very much. But when we do it’s generally early in the mornings. For my windowboxes and planters of flowers I’ve been using the bucket of water that collects in our basement dehumidifier – or as I call it, “the free water from the air”.

Southern california is dry on rain, dude. I would save so much money on water if there are rain for my vegetable garden…and the grass can water itself too. Ha!
